UNESCO Chair in Water Resources (UNESCO- CWR) is an academic for postgraduate studies and research centre in water resources and Environmental Engineering. It serves the local, regional “the Nile Basin, Eastern and Central Africa, and Shared Aquifers” as well as international water community. It was established in 1994 following the agreement signed by the UNESCO Director General and the Vice Chancellor of the Omdurman Islamic University on behalf of the Sudan Government. Its roles are to build capacity of water professionals in Sudan and the region (Africa and Arab regions), raise awareness in water related fields and conduct research and consultancy work.


UNESCO-CWR mission is “to build, enhance and strengthen capacity for sustainable water resources development and management through education, research, consultancy, and knowledge dissemination.”


We are committed to promote the role of water in life.


The main objectives of UNESCO-CWR are summarized as follows:

  1. Capacity building in Integrated Water Resources Planning and Management and related fields;
  2. Promote integrated research systems based on multi- disciplinary approach;
  3. Documentation, dissemination and awareness raising;
  4. Facilitate coordination, collaboration and cooperation among universities, research Institutions and centers at national, regional and international levels;
  5. Provide consultancy services in its areas of expertise.
